SIGNS PREYER interviewed on Behind The Veil Webzine (Greece)

SIGNS PREYER Interview

Genre: Groove metal
1. First of all I’d like you to fill us in on what’s happening in the SIGNS PREYER camp at the moment. Please point out the most important moments and experiences you’ve had with the band thus far, be them good or bad.

All the experiences had by SIGNS PREYER are good and very much important for us, we started playing for fun and now we keep enjoying music even with a more professional approach. Everything done as a band, has made us grow both during funny moments and of course during hard working moments. It’s fantastic to see what we have done and what we are doing.

2. What made you form a band of your own? Which are some of your biggest influences?

Our style is mostly influenced by a mix of heavy metal, southern style and groovy sounds. All the musicians in the band listen to so much music that the influences are too many to say, but we are big fans of PANTERA, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY and DOWN.

3. If you had to write a review for “Signs Preyer” what would you say trying to be as objective as possible? Which are the album’s highlights and which its weak moments or elements, according to you?

I think that listening to the album, is easy to find the strong union of the band; the lineup has always been the same and it increases the groove the impact of the songs. Probably the weak element of this work, derives from the union of new songs and older songs, it’s easy to notice a lot of differences in style and songwriting.

4. What do you believe you can offer to the metal scene? Why should the metal heads check you out?

Well, that’s a good question; as many other bands in the underground, we try to do our best, writing songs that are important for us and playing our music. I think that every band that works really hard should be listened to in order to know what music means for them.

5. What kind of procedure do you follow when you compose songs? How do you get into the right mood in order to make the songs sound groovy and exactly like you want them?

We don’t follow a procedure, sometimes we start from a guitar riff, a bass part or from a drum time. Once we started from lyrics also; generally we don’t pass so much time on the same ideas, because we prefer to work on parts that sound good from the beginning and we get better results.

6. How do you “know” when a song is ready and you stop working on it?

That’s easy, if you MUST headbang to it and we completely enjoy playing the song, it’s ready! \m/

7. Which song or songs do you think are the most ideal to represent the whole album’s essence?

As I said, the album is quite complex, there are so many styles and sounds that is hard to answer, but I think that the song “Anger” and “It Comes Back Real” represents the album best because they are full of feelings and meaning for us.

8. Which are your sources of inspiration when it comes to the lyrics? Which are the main topics you deal with?

Our source of inspiration is our entire life. We take all the signs that we can find and make them ours. We internalize them and after a long search for the right words that may define the concept we tie everything together. A search for the right sound and meaning that conveys the message well is always a problem...

9. Who created the cover artwork? The face seems intense and pissed off! What does it show and how is it connected to the album title and lyrics?

The cover was drawn by Damiano Bellocchio. An artist, a thinker but also a dear friend, who always follows us and we always follow him. It's all tied up! Cover, lyrics, music, messages, everything! We always try to communicate a clear message about our emotions, feelings and hopes for a life without chains, and the cover communicates, in our opinion, this message very well and so fluently.

10. Do you have any plans for live shows or a tour? How are you going to promote your work?

Yes, as always SIGNS PREYER have many live shows, in addition we are moving to try new paths. We are expanding our catchment area. There is a nice surprise regarding the tour both for us and for our fans. So stay tuned and you won’t regret.

11. Have you made any video clips? With YouTube I think videos have started becoming a necessity for bands again. How helpful is the Internet?

We made a video a few years ago for “Dark Soul” but then the song was arranged in another way so we left the old song online with the old video.
The Internet is a double-edged sword. It should be used sparingly and with intelligence. But now it is an indispensable tool for everyone. The important thing is not to become a junkie.

12. What kind of feedback have you received thus far? Can you mention a comment, be it positive or negative, serious or funny, that impressed you?

At the moment we have had only positive feedback both from the press and from fans. So… great! A comment that impressed us? mmm hard to say… oh yeah!!! maybe we can mention one!
The first is a review that said: "now I must get up off my fat ass, to increase the volume and playback all the album at the maximum!" Awesome!

13. Is there a phrase that you think describes SIGNS PREYER in the best possible way?

Mmm, well, someone once wrote: "Finally we listened to an emerging band that composes better than famous international artists. Nice job SIGNS PREYER!”

14. By the way what does SIGNS PREYER mean and how did you choose is as your band name?

SIGNS PREYER means predator of signs, as you know "preyer" is a form no longer used to say predator. We wanted to choose this form to strengthen our contact with the "teachers", past bands like LED ZEPPELIN, DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH, etc… bands that we love to call "analogical". P.S. We also recorded everything in analog without a lot of modern "magic".

15. What thoughts and images do you want to create to your listeners through your music?

As we said earlier, we want to give you what we live. We want to give you a new awareness of conscience, emotional and sensory awareness. We want you to experience the world in which we live when we compose. The Comedy Theater is ready to be tragic 'cause each comic is actually a tragic actor.

16. How’s the metal scene in Italy? How difficult is it for an Italian band to stand out?

Change topic? ahahahah no I'm kidding. Well, the Italian metal scene is minimal. Usually what you find is pretentious. Except in some cases where there are excellent bands, with whom we have very very good friendships. Stand out? It’s difficult but… be patient…
A good musician is always a humble person. Like here in Italy as in the whole world.
