Kani, vicentini rockettari alle prese con il secondo capitolo “Badass”. Suoni genuini e tematiche pungenti per 35 minuti di piacere interiore.

1.    Benvenuti Kani, fateci un piccolo resoconto della vostra carriera artistica…

Grazie, intanto per cominciare diciamo che i Kani sono nati nell’estate 2007; però il primo anno di vera attività è il 2008, in cui “ci proviamo” su strada in Veneto e in qualche incursione nel Nord Italia, e produciamo il demo omonimo (composto da quattro tracce originali, We bite, Too sexy for my pants, Proud smoker e Lost&shaken, e da una cover dei Motorhead, You better run, ribattezzata You better drink, finita in una compilation di tributo alla band inglese con altri gruppi italiani, l’Italian Tribute to Motorhead). Nell’agosto 2009, grazie a un gruppo di Colonia che ci ha ascoltati sul nostro Myspace (www.myspace.com/kaniband), facciamo un mini-tour di 4 date in Germania (Colonia, Berlino) e in Olanda – tour da cui uscirà un mini-live, “From the gutter to your ears. Live in Cologne” (con tre tracce: Hair of the dog, Mister Death Rider, Joker is bad for you).

Nel frattempo consolidiamo il nome dalle nostre parti macinando live su live, dividiamo i palco con moltissime band, tra cui, Nine Pound Hammer, Dirty Penny, Pino Scotto, Linea 77, Texas Terry Bomb, Antares, Strange Corner, Broken Dolls, the Sade…(per dire: nell’underground locale le nostre magliette sono piuttosto diffuse) fino alla registrazione, fra dicembre 2009 e gennaio 2010, del primo full-lenght di 11 tracce, “Rockabeast” (che significa “rockabbestia”, la nostra filosofia: un rock’n’roll estremo, viscerale, stradaiolo, che mette d’accordo metallari, punk e rockettari che amino i concerti d’impatto, ad alto volume). L’etichetta che ci distribuisce e ci promuove è la Nicotine Records di Tortona (Alessandria). A registrare, mixare e masterizzare è il Raptor Studio di Matteo “Ciube” Tabacco, bassista della band vicentina Dufresne. Dopo 2 anni in giro per l’Italia e l’Europa per promuovere il disco, il 2012 è l’anno del secondo full- leght, di 10 tracce dal titolo “Badass”, registrato a Como, all’AlfaOmega studio di Alex Azzali, ed è stato presentato il 27 ottobre del  2012.

2.    Da quale idea prende vita questo monicker?

Hahahahahahaha, questa è una delle domande più frequenti, comunque non c’è una vera e propria idea alle spalle, il nome Kani è volutamente ironico, viene da un modo scherzoso del chitarrista Diego”Pante” Lovato di chiamare gli amici.

3.    Secondo album della vostra carriera e primo su Go Down Records, come è nato il vostro rapporto con l’etichetta?

Conosciamo Go Down Records da molti anni, sopratutto Max (OJM), inoltre parecchie band di nostri amici sono con Go Down e tutti ce ne parlavano molto bene, la nostra vecchia etichetta (la Nicotine Records) stava per chiudere, quindi quando  ci siamo guardati attorno su quali etichette potevano produrci, Go Down Records è stata la prima a venirci in mente. Poi una sera siamo andati a sentire Max suonare con gli OJM e gli abbiamo portato il master delle registrazioni, un paio di giorni dopo ci chiama che il disco gli piaceva…ed eccoci qua…

4.    Il vostro rock’n’roll oltre “a non fare prigionieri” sembra attingere da trent’anni di musica, immerso nei settanta e ottanta per via di una certa attitudine punk. Si notano, tuttavia, anche contaminazioni degli anni cinquanta, concordate?

Concordiamo appieno, spesso ci etichettano come Motorhead style è vero che i nostri riferimenti sono Motorhead, Peter Pan Speedrock e Nashville Pussy, però la nostra musica ha varie  influenze che spaziano dal rock’n'roll delle origini, anni ’50, al punkrock e all’heavy metal fino al blues.

5.    Se riguardo al sound si tende ad essere spregiudicati e senza regole, anche nelle tematiche non scherzate minimamente. A parte l’ironica Bud is My Trainer, dedicata al mitico attore Bud Spencer, trattate anche il sociale e il filosofico Nietsche; in pratica non vi ponete nessun limite…

Assolutamente, quando componiamo cerchiamo sempre di non porci nessun limite, ne nella musica, ne nei testi. Non stiamo li a farci xxghe mentali sui generi, se suona più rock, più metal, più punk o più altro… l’importante che abbia lo stile KANI, quello è l’unico limite.

6.    Parlatemi di Dancing Star, a me fa venire in mente le popolazioni afroamericane che vivono lungo il confine del fiume Mississipi. Probabilmente se il pezzo fosse stato suonato con un mandolino sarebbe stata la ciliegina sulla torta

Dici?!?…secondo me il “dobro” ha fatto il suo sporco lavoro…e poi nessuno di noi sa suonare il mandolino…hehehehe… Comunque si l’idea era quella di ricreare il sound del blues del delta, kanizzandolo ovviamente.

7.    Live show in supporto al nuovo album? Descriveteci un vostro tipico spettacolo rock’n’roll

Al momento stiamo tentando di suonare il più possibile in Italia (a volte anche con condizioni un po’ sfavorevoli…) pur di promuovere il disco…a tal proposito se qualcuno che sta leggendo l’intervista volesse farci suonare, questo è il momento giusto… Per la prossima stagione stiamo tentando di progettare qualcosa all’estero, zona Germania, Austria, Svizzera, Slovenia…

I nostri live si potrebbero sintetizzare in 3 parole: sporchi, adrenalinici e alcoolici!!!

8.    Ora che l’album è fuori quali saranno i vostri passi futuri?

Promozione del disco in primis e poi siamo in fase di lavorazione del primo video che se tutto va bene dovrebbe uscire in marzo.

9.    Qual è il vostro sogno nel cassetto ancora da realizzare?

Suonare di supporto ai Motorhead.

Italy is mainly known worldwide for its heavy/power metal scene, but this doesn’t mean it doesn’t have bands from other genres.

In fact, it has a pretty strong extreme metal scene and lately we see bands coming from there following a direction that differentiates them from the norms and the majority of bands. One such case is SIGNS PREYER who can’t be easily classified since their influences can be found here and there, meaning that their music is all over the place including elements from many metal genres. So, if diversity is one of the main ingredients you look for in a band then SIGNS PREYER is here to deliver. Their creation is strongly influenced by the American metal scene and not so by the European one. So, if you are fans of groove metal, southern rock, sludge metal, stoner rock and you like to listen to some cool guitar solos and groovy, catchy riffs here and there then search no more. I know that I’ve listed plenty of genres and believe me there are a few more that I haven’t, but let me clear out that the end result sounds really tight and coherent. SIGNS PREYER might remind you of certain bands at some points, but still they manage to incorporate all their influences and transform them through their own perspective and inspiration, thus their debut full length work sounds fresh and rather unique. What’s more, SIGNS PREYER seem to be a bonded band comprised by competent musicians who can deliver heavy music, addictive riffs, dark melodies and a stone wall of a rhythm section while all this is supported by a talented singer whose hoarse vocals enhance the dirty, groovy atmosphere of the songs. KANI – Badass (Go Down records 2012)

Descrivere questa seconda prova dei vicentini Kani è quanto mai semplice dal punto di vista musicale ed entusiasmante per il sottoscritto.
Dopo aver preso vita nel 2007, negli anni questi rocchettari spregiudicati registrano un demo e un album per poi affrontare innumerevoli live show e giungere a questo secondo capitolo apparentemente senza regole.
Badass si presenta come un agguerrito rock‘n’roll e punk ruvido, sporco, grezzo e ad alto tasso alcolemico; 35 minuti in cui si nota una grande personalità e maturazione nell’attingere dagli anni cinquanta, settanta, ottanta (difficile precisarlo) con testi che riguardano il sociale e anche Nietsche.
Song che inducono ad una danza spasmodica e al limite del cerebrale, quasi fosse un rito religioso. Joker, singer dall’ugola roca e dalle corde vocali graffiate non sbaglia un colpo, un album che si conclude con una Mississipi song, ovvero “Dancing Star”, ballata blues che conduce la mia mente in quei paesaggi popolati dai neri e più poveri d’America.
Un album per i fan dei Motorhead!

HUMULUS – Humulus (Go Down Records 2012)

Guardando l’anno di formazione della band (2009) mi son detto,  tre anni per registrare un album sono tanti…. però con il risultato ottenuto attendere ne è valsa la pena. GliHumulus sono un trio proveniente da Bergamo che abbraccia sonorità stoner rock e lo fa con sicurezza e capacità. Il sound si rende avvincente grazie ai suoni di chitarra grassi e corposi, una batteria dai ritmi semplici e scarni  e infine un vocalist molto american style.
Nove pezzi per una formula diretta e facilmente ascoltabile che, nonostante  nel complesso sa farsi piacere, in alcuni momenti (oltre metà album), accusa perdite di brillantezza e lucidità soffrendo per qualche minuto di ripetitività… roba di poco conto, vi esorto, quindi, a non scoraggiavi.
Esordio che da concretezza nella lunga preparazione dell’album e che ci auguriamo  si riconfermi anche in futuro.

BLEEDING EYES -  A Trip To Closet Universe (Go Down Records 2012)

Crudo, morboso, acido, sporco, psichedelico, questi sono solo 5 degli aggettivi che potrei attribuire al nuovo disco dei trevigiani Bleeding Eyes. Il gruppo è in giro per il pianeta dal 2002 suonando sullo stesso palco di Slayer, Anthrax, Soulfly, Obituary, Crowbar, Graveyard ecc…
Questi rockers deliziano i nostri palati con sei pezzi di sludge rock psichedelico capace di drogarti la mente.
Song che vedono un pezzo d’apertura doc, come “L’arrotino”, lento e corposo per passare a uno più classicamente rock blues e americaneggiante come“Cruel Word” che in parte mi ha ricordato i sciolti Pride & Glory di Zakk Wilde.
Si passa a “Pozzo Senza Fondo”, un mix tra i due brani apripista, continuando con “Barrage”, e qui c’è da dire che l’album sembra dividersi in due parti perché rispetto al rock sporco iniziale il tutto assume una forma più sperimentale e psichedelica, quasi ad abbracciare sonorità doom.
Ovviamente più si va avanti e più il tutto diventa surreale per una combinazione trip cerebrale, conclude nei suoi 11 minuti di allucinazioni“From Now On It Can Only Get Worse”. Grande disco da gustare al buio o con luce soffusa mentre fuori diluvia…

SIGNS PREYER "S/T" (Suoni Distorti Magazine Review)

SIGNS PREYER - Signs Preyer

I Signs Preyer sono una band proveniente dall'Umbria attiva dal 2006.
Dopo un demo d'esordio e importanti esibizioni live, durante alcune delle quali hanno condiviso il palco con artisti come di Paul Di Anno, Corrosion Of Conformity, Pino Scotto, Killing Touch e altri; questi bravi musicisti si mettono a lavoro su quello che nello scorso 2012 si presenta con omonimo titolo, l'album di debutto.
Ho ascoltato un paio di pezzi del precedente demo e la prima cosa che si nota è la crescita musicale .Tra l'altro alcuni pezzi contenuti su questo album sono tratti dallo stesso, ri-registrati per l'occasione.

La band propone un solido sound, molto groove con inflessioni thrash metal e quel possente muro sonoro che caratterizza bands come i Black Label Society - ascoltatevi il lavoro fatto dietro la sei corde e poi mi dite. Non mancano alcuni riferimenti a certi metallica, anche in certi frangenti per l'utilizzo della voce, che comunque esula dallo scopiazzare qualcuno.
La band ha una sua personalità, miscelando alla risoluzione sonora indicata anche spunti crossover ed alcuni heavy, senza sdegnare aloni hard blues sanguigni e al contempo massicci ed una ottima dose di southern. A condire il tutto un filo sonoro stoner che fa capolino quasi costantemente, durante tutto l'ascolto.

Certo, forse un delineamento più netto del genere che si vuol proporre renderebbe più "chiaro" l'ascolto, ma non per questo l'album sia un difettoso prodotto, anzi, lo si ascolta che è un piacere; palesando la grande qualità di questi musicisti che sanno il fatto loro.
Dall'opener 'Anger', avrete di che gioire facendovi trascinare da riffoni coinvolgenti e il cantato che si alterna tra momenti più solforosi ad altri più potenti e corposi. Un plauso al vocalist, tra gli altri.
Dopo la groovosa 'Bitch Witch', con ritmi interessanti ed un buon gusto per la melodia di matrice southern, dove fanno bella figura dei begli assoli, si passa dalle song che ci tengo a sottolineare come punti forti del disco; 'Just To Kill You'e 'Painless Pain' che mostrano la grande qualità di musicisti.
Risulta chiarissimo che la band ha speso del tempo nella composizione di quest'album, infatti nessun pezzo è un riempitivo e non si giunge mai a momenti noiosi, anzi.

Sono certo di poter affermare che la maturità dei Signs Preyer è arrivata ad un eccellente punto, seppur ci sia sempre da smussare qualcosa, come le (relativamente) molteplici influenze che potrebbero risultare un pò troppe per orecchie non abituate a tali situazioni sonore, ma comunque di facile approccio, se siete amanti delle citate sonorità.
Cito anche la martellante 'Hell' che ad un'attacco spacca ossa succede un momento in mid tempos molto maestoso, con il cantato che vi entrerà piacevolmente nella testa. Un bel groove/thrash contorniato da accorgimenti heavy, per quanto riguarda i riff.
In conclusione troviamo la traccia intitolata omonima della band che lascia con un certo senso di soddisfazione. Vorticosi riff vi ammalieranno, con una certa dose di fascino ed un mood molto hard rock. In chiusura di song troviamo soluzioni molto oscure e "alienate" che donano una certa sensazione tetra, con cadenzamenti malsani ma di gradevole ascolto.

Per concludere, un plauso va indubbiamente alla band che si è dimostrata molto di qualità, tecnicamente ed artisticamente parlando, così anche come i pezzi.
La produzione, seppur non sia il massimo, è apprezzabile. Ripeto, personalmente avrei preferito un genere più delineato, non inteso come il voler dire di eliminare le molteplici influenze, poichè esse sono una delel caratteristiche dei Signs Preyer, ma piuttosto dare una linea guida più definita, sulla quale successivamente inserire le varie "parti" che compongono le song _ ovviamente è un mio modestissimo parere, e come tale non vuol influire nel "giudizio" generale.

Adesso sono molto curioso di ascoltare nuove composizioni, che immagino saranno ancor di più di alto livello. Sicuramente dovete degnare questo album di un'ascolto, gli è dovuto!

Un paio di anni fa ho già avuto occasione di recensire e intervistare i Signs Preyer per il loro demo 2010 e l’impressione fu ottima. Oggi con questo nuovo lavoro autointitolato, li ritrovo in forma smagliante e carichi più che mai.

Devo dire che la band è migliorata sotto tutti i fronti, nelle nuove tracce e quelle ri-registrate, appartenenti al precedente demo, hanno assunto una nuova veste in cui il groove, il blues e quel tipico rock americano e sudaticcio diventa il punto cardine assieme all’incisiva voce di Corrado.

Ormai penso già da tempo che con il ritorno in pompa magna del thrash metal, il rock, lo sludge e lo stoner saranno i prossimi e riemergere prepotentemente e i Signs Preyer ne sono un esempio lampante. L’unica cosa che avrei evitato è l’inserimento dei commenti radiofonici situati nel finale della traccia nascosta.

Mi chiedo solo se un giorno anche il povero power metal ritornerà nel suo stato di grazia… ottimo ritorno!

1. First of all I’d like you to fill us in on what’s happening in the JOYLESS JOKERS camp at the moment. I’d also like you to point out the most important moments and experiences you’ve had with the band thus far, be them good or bad.

Hi everybody and thanks for this interview!!
Well now our activity is to focus on composing new songs and other things like promotional videos, photos etc... I think the most important moments were when we played in many big events like Sun Valley Metal Fest or Ferrock Festival where we had the possibility to share the stage with a lot of great bands from all over Italy. Another important moment for us was when we have signed the contract of Endorsement with Gold Music and also started the collaboration with Music Solution Agency.

2. What made you form a band of your own? What was your driving force and which were your influences?

Our band was born because we love playing music and we want to play something together. The early years were different because we used to play covers and more rock stuff. Afterwards we started to listen to other stuff, in particular death metal bands like IN FLAMES, ARCH ENEMY, CARCASS and many more... So, we started to compose our own songs in this “style”

3. Can you present “Taste of Victory” to our readers in a few words? Which are the album’s highlights and which its weak moments or elements, according to you?

“Taste of Victory” is our first full length album in the studio. We are very proud of it and it represents our own point of view of death metal style, with modern and melodic influences. Obviously I like every single song in it and if I have to find a weak element in it I think it’s the fact that every song is fast and heavy. Maybe we have to include more slower parts and riffs. We’ll see in future...

4. In which ways does “Taste of Victory” differ from your EP “Arms of Darkness”? How and in which ways has the band’s sound evolved and progressed?

I think that “Arms of Darkness” was more affected by our own influences. It sounds very “Swedish” while “Taste of Victory” is an attempt to detach ourselves from that. It represents the way we evolved our sound including other stuff and influences. We also changed our guitars from 6 to 7 strings to achieve more aggressive and heavy tonalities.

5. Why do you think you stand out from most melodic death metal bands out there? What do you believe you can offer to the metal scene?

There are a lot of great bands in the underground scene. We don’t think that we have to differ from other bands. We only think to compose our songs in a way that we like and I think it’s quite different from the other bands. We are composed of members that come from very different styles in terms of music like blues, rock, death metal, classic and many others. So we try to include all our musical tastes when we compose songs and this result differs every time we do it.

6. What kind of procedure do you follow when you compose songs? Do you have to be in a certain state of mind in order to perform the songs as you want?

We simply compose riffs and ideas by jamming with a guitar and a drum or at home with our instrument and then we try to put 2-3 riffs together to compose the structure of the song. There are periods when we compose a lot of riffs and others where we can’t figure out a simple part... It’s the common problem of creativity... But we don’t need to be in a certain state of mind when we compose songs.

7. Which song or songs do you think are the most ideal to represent the whole album’s essence?

I think that “Scream” could represent the whole essence of our sound. There are a lot of elements and parts in that song, from heavy to melodic riffs. There’s the first part of the song more aggressive with classic death metal parts and a “stop” in the middle with a more melodic opening. 

8. Which are your sources of inspiration when it comes to the lyrics? Which are the main topics you deal with?

Our inspiration for the lyrics comes from reflections on death, on suicide, on sacrifice, on nightmares, on fears, on despair and on the desire to show everyone what we have done up to now. Other lyrics are based on bad consequences of sad events that took place in our lives like the loss of our friends and personal disappointments.

9. Why did you name the album “Taste of Victory”? What do you mean? Does the release of this album give you a taste of victory or is there an entirely different meaning behind it?

That name represents our desire for revenge to certain situations that have marked us in our lives, also in the recording phase of the disc. We have faced many difficulties and that album entirely represents our rebirth and our victory.

10. Who created the cover artwork? It’s impressive! How was it inspired and how is it connected to the album title and lyrics?

The artwork was created by Daniel Comerci of Hownworks. It’s formed by many elements that were linked with the album title, and also with our name. There are skeletons that represent death, there’s an hourglass which represents the passage of time, there are snakes that represent the change, the letters alfa and omega instead represent the opposites like life/death, joy/sadness..

11. Do you have any plans for live shows? How easy is it for you to play your songs live? Do you have to be in a certain state of mind in order to create the right atmosphere and feeling?

The main difficulty when we play live is the ability to resist 40 minutes of doing headbanging eheh J. Seriously, we don’t need to be in a certain state of mind when we play live. There’s no difference for us between playing in front of 10 or 1000 people. We always put our head down and pull the strings harder.

12. Have you made any video clips? With YouTube I think videos have started becoming a necessity for bands again. How helpful is the Internet?

At the moment we haven’t made a video clip yet. We have a nice video that was produced with some pieces of our live performance at Sun Valley metal fest. Here’s the link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qi7ZlBvvD44I think the Internet is very helpful in order to maintain contacts with people and share band pages and songs but there are too many bands and too many songs to listen to so at a certain point you have too much information.

13. What kind of feedback have you received thus far? Can you mention a comment, be it positive or negative, serious or funny, that impressed you?

With “Taste of Victory” we fortunately received a lot good reviews and we are very proud of it. People that come to our live shows like our music in general. Unfortunately now I can’t remember a funny comment but I remember a very positive that we received from a member of a well known group and he said that we deserve much more and at the moment it was really nice.

14. What do you want people to think when they listen to JOYLESS JOKERS?

Well….. I love JOYLESS JOKERS... I think it sounds really good eheh

15. How are things in Italy music-wise? How’s the metal scene over there? How difficult is it for a band to stand out?

In Italy there are a lot of really good bands, but the problem is only one: people don’t go to see live shows. Not only for the underground scene. Unfortunately it’s our worst and biggest problem that creates others like the fact that a lot of music clubs are closing. So it’s a very difficult situation also for the best known bands.

16. By the way you have an interesting moniker. How did you come up with it?

Thanks! JOYLESS JOKERS is a word pun that represents the contrast between opposite elements: the joker that in general represents joy, and on the other side the sadness. It’s a metaphor mainly and at the same time it sounds good.
